When parents file a child custody court action, there are many considerations required. The court must address child custody, visitation, paternity, child support and other child related matters. Typically, when parents are still married, these issues are handled as part of a separation, divorce, or other legal proceedings.

Often, when parents cannot agree on how to share the custody of a child, either parent can seek court orders to address the matter. The judge may hold several hearings in order to sort out the issues at hand. Further, the judge could set a trial to ultimately decide the matters, if the parties do not eventually reach a full agreement.

There is no simple answer as to how long the child custody process will take in Jackson Michigan

All child custody cases are different, therefore, it is difficult to estimate how long the process will take. However, if the parties involved agree to most or all of the terms, the case could be finished fairly quickly. On the other hand, if the parties cannot agree on most of the items in question, several court hearings may be required before a final order can be granted.

In summary, issues of custody are front and center with divorcing parents. Decisions that are made will affect important family matters such as;

  • Will one parent have sole custody and other parent visitation?
  • Will the parents share joint custody?
  • Will one parent have the final say on education or medical treatment?
  • What is the best way to split parenting time?
